This is a collection of discovery, of insight, and of vision. These poems see the roots of community in the family, and the roots of culture and government in the community. “In making the handle of an axe by cutting wood with an axe the model is indeed near at hand.” In exploring this axiom of Lu Ji’s, Gary Snyder continues:
I am an axe
And my son a handle, soon
To be shaping again, model
And tool, craft of culture,
How we go on.
Formally, the 71 poems in Axe Handles range from lyrics to riddles to narratives. The collection is divided into three parts, called “Loops,” “Little Songs for Gaia,” and “Nets,” each containing poems of disciplined clarity. Gary Snyder knows well the great power of silence in a poem, silence that allows the mind space enough to discover the magic of song.

The title poem of this collection may be Snyder's strongest poem of the 1980s, and this is high praise. Incorporating Snyder's familiar and welcome themes of nature, family and eastern philosophy, it is a passage into a world of insights, small epiphanies, the rhythms of nature and culture, speech and sky, revealing themselves between these lines. Do yourself a favor and take a look at Axe Handles. Read more...

Buying Tools: Lifetime Guarantees

I hate to say how many splitting axe handles my son and I have gone through. If I just bought a fiberglass-handled splitting axe with a lifetime replacement guarantee, I could stop supporting the hickory wood workers. If only the decision was that

Gary Snyder comes home to Reed College

16.10.94

Reed College celebrated its centennial with a series of programs and reunions, and for a few days the campus was crawling with educated, white-haired people who wanted to talk about calligraphy.

They came to the right place. Not only was there an exhibition about Lloyd Reynolds, the legendary teacher who taught himself calligraphy and then inspired generations to think deeply about what they wrote and how they wrote it, but also Reynolds' most famous student, Gary Snyder, class of '51, was at the center of the action.

Axe Handles

One afternoon the last week in April

Showing Kai how to throw a hatchet

One-half turn and  it sticks in a stump.

He recalls the hatchet-head

Without a handle, in the shop

And go gets it, and wants it for his own

A broken-off axe handle behind the door

Is long enough for a hatchet,

We cut it to length and take it

With the hatchet head

And working hatchet, to the wood block.
