I remember hearing this the first time and thinking there was something wrong with it.  Even as I carried my first babe inside of me, and had no earthly means of knowing how to raise a child or who my child would become, I still knew that something about that statement didn’t resonate with me.

You see, I don’t really care if my kids are happy.  Well, let me rephrase that: My children’s happiness is not highest on my list of dreams for their lives.  Of course, as their mother, I want to see them enjoy life, find meaningful work, and blessings in their family.  But this is entirely different from happiness.  Happiness comes and goes.  Happiness says, “go whatever direction that makes you feel good!  Do what feels right!”  When I know, as a believer, that the heart is deceitful above all things.  Our hearts cannot be trusted to lead us.  Only God’s Word can be trusted in this most vital of roles.
