Good garden tools make all the difference

COM There was a time when an expensive tiller was essential to my gardening. No more. Now I prepare new and old beds with newspapers and mulch, both free. I have given details in other columns and in several of my books. You can turn a swatch of lawn

Rural and community development

I understand Japan and Taiwan invented mechanised implements such as garden tractors and tiller which ought to be studies to see if they can be used instead of the hoe. Of course, the plough has always been more productive than a hoe.

Common good calls for sacrifices

03.07.11

The Douglas County Department of Enlightenment and Coercion paid me a visit the other day, along with the Lawrence Office of Environmental and Social Supervision. Also in attendance were representatives of the Free State Bureau of Restrictions and the Pioneer Office of Entitlements. I counted 42 cars and trucks, each driven by a single individual. (Separate vehicles give individuals quiet time to dream up new regulations and growth prevention initiatives, I learned.)

A forklift was required to unload Vision 5050, the manual which the county has compiled to determine its future for the next 3,000 years. The purpose of the visit was to designate "views" on my property. I was informed by an officer of Visions, Walter Utopia, whose degree of Ecology Apolcalyptic him qualified to identify the natural beauty and refine interactions of humans with the environment.

Watering Newly Planted Trees and Shrubs | Rural Messenger

by K-State

Newly planted trees have not established the extensive root system needed to absorb enough water during hot, dry, windy summers. Even trees two or three years old should receive special care.

Deep, infrequent watering and mulching can help trees become established. Newly transplanted trees need at least 10 gallons of water per week, and on sandy soils they will need that much applied twice a week. The secret is getting that water to soak deeply into the soil, so it evaporates more slowly and is available to the tree’s roots longer.
