Despite the cool, the wet, the drizzle, the fog and the dyspepsia of a spring gone awry, the beans, spinach and carrots have pushed their way through the soil and now form graceful arcs of green.
There is such promise in these rows of new seedlings: fresh lettuce and chard for summer, tomatoes and cukes for fall salads or salsa, and carrots and parsnips for the winter larder - all this bounty from such tiny seeds.
Now of course comes the work: the thinning, the mulching and of course the weeding. I am, however, feeling ecstatic about the weeding this year. I have invested in a wheel hoe. This very ancient tool is something I have known about since I can remember but somehow never got around to actually acquiring. Since the moment I cut into the soil it was love at first bite.
