Writer and director Nicolas Winding Refn made his 1996 feature film debut, PUSHER. This violent, edgy, yet moving cult classic established Refn as an uncompromising filmmaker of great talent and depth. Following PUSHER, Refn returned to the Copenhagen underworld in 2004 with PUSHER II: WITH BLOOD ON MY HANDS, while 2005 saw the release of PUSHER III: I'M THE ANGEL OF DEATH. All three PUSHER films display Refn effortlessly blending moody atmospherics and frenetic action, portraying his characters with a depth and confidence belying his years. Though each film can be appreciated independently of the other two, Refn subtly interweaves these three tales so that a minor character in one film moves to the fore to become the central character of the next. The resulting trilogy stands as a masterful reinvention of international crime cinema, as poignantly human as it is brutally and viscerally realized. The PUSHER TRILOGY reveals the humanity in even the most violent criminals and how every pusher--no matter what his status--is only one bad deal away from total ruin.

Frank and Tonny are foul-mouthed, small-time drug dealers who constantly (and comically) brag about their squalid sexual exploits. But when a drug deal goes bad and Frank is arrested then released for lack of evidence, he finds himself in deep debt with a ruthless Yugoslav dealer who wants his money now. Frank, believing he's been betrayed by Tonny, takes revenge, making one desperate ploy after another as his life spirals into a nightmare of bad choices. Though clearly influenced by recent hipster movies such as Trainspotting and Pulp Fiction, a truer ancestor to Pusher is Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets. Pusher is brutally realistic and rigorously unsentimental--there are no flashy camera tricks. The movie takes into account the occasional moment of gentleness in Frank's troubled relationship with a prostitute but doesn't use that to exonerate him. And yet, despite everything, Frank is sympathetic simply because he's human. The performances are excellent, the editing sharp and propulsive, the violence is spare but extremely effective. Pusher slowly draws its net tighter and tighter, until every moment seems charged with menace. --Bret Fetzer

Life's Recipe: Pill Pusher
by Sara
Our dog is too smart/stubborn/fraidy-cat to take treats even if they are wrapped in cheese. It would be awesome to treat his flea allergy (I'm not kidding) with Benadryl, but I'd have to give it to him in a shot or in his sleep or possibly in a shot given in his sleep...or something like that. Now if I could hide it in cat poo, I'd be good to go (I know, ewww, but judging from how often he sneaks to the litter box and filches some, it is obviously his favorite treat. And why he is not allowed to lick me. Ever. Anywhere.).
