2011's late planting season wrapped up for Hogen

16.10.13

BUFFALO, N.D. - On June 9 Rodney Hogen parked his planting equipment in the machine shed, signaling the end of the 2011 planting season.

"I finished up planting on Thursday and was even able to go back and seed a few spots that were too wet earlier," he said. "And if it doesn't rain I could have gone back later and gotten some more of those areas, but how late do you want to plant? So, I put the planter away for the year."

Actually, Rodney had better luck at getting his ground seeded than many other farmers. In the end, he figures he will have about 4 or 5 percent of his total acres that he wasn't able to plant this spring. "Right now some of the soybeans are struggling to break through the crust, so a little rain right now would help us," he noted. "We had a little sprinkle today (June 10), but it wasn't enough to soften up the top of the ground.

by darwinp

I have a Trimble 750 and DC 300 modem in my planter tractor and will use the Iowa CORS RTK network to plant. I am supposed to have sub 1 inch accuracy. I will be using a 7120 with a CIH cornhead. Will I regret buying a 12 row cornhead? Sounds like a good combination. A 12 row cornhead on a 7120 will keep your groundspeed down quite slow anyway so it will be easier to drive that...
