But taxpayers may have a separate meter installed for irrigation and other water activities unrelated sewers.

According to the Deputy Director of Public Works Dave Allen, the counter allows owners to avoid sewer charges on defined not use the sewage, such as lawn watering, car washing and gardening.

Since sewer charges are calculated based on water consumption, Allen said, taxpayers could experience some long-term savings if they choose to install meters.

"It is intended to relieve owners of single family homes to pay sewer charges on water that would not necessarily go down the drain," he said.

PORTSMOUTH — Ratepayers of single-family residences hooked into the city water system could experience savings, should they install a separate meter called "The Firefly."

The reminder of the technology, which has been offered since 1997, is timely, given the fact that city sewer rates are increasing dramatically. Customers will see an average hike of $27.90 per month on their sewer bills. Starting July 1, ratepayers using less than 10 units per month will begin paying $8.29 per unit of usage, rather than the previous rate of $5.50 per unit. For those who use more than 10 units per month, the rate will rise to $9.11 per unit for all units after the first 10.
