I'm just a biologist generally not an expert in horticulture, but it always seems to me that the rollers do more harm than good.
As long as the grass was placed on a well-prepared soil and watered, it should be good.

we moved in to a new place and the yard was taken over by weeds...we got rid of the weeds and leveled the ground but we want to lay the sod ourselves..I read that you should go over the sod with a roller filled with water...is that completely necessary?
no but it helps. make sure when you lay the sod you stagger the rolls (so it looks like you're laying bricks on the ground) otherwise when the sod shrinks (it will) you'll end up with lines of bare earth right across the yard. make sure you water the new sod for at least 8 hours after laying.
