Girl in hospital after falling under mower
A 9-year-old girl from Bedford County was having surgery Tuesday night from wounds she suffered after she fell from a riding lawn mower and was pinned under it until firefighters rescued her, police said.
The girl had been driving the mower and her 13-year-old brother had been driving an SUV owned by their mother on a lawn off Big Island Highway when the SUV struck the mower, Bedford County Sheriff's Deputy Ricky Gardner said Tuesday.
"The male was following the girl around the yard, and when he tried to stop the SUV, he hit the gas pedal instead of the brakes," Gardner said.
